What It's Like to Work at James Grab and Tipper Hire

James Grab and Tipper Hire is a family-run business built on strong values — hard work, honesty, reliability, and respect for our team. We've grown from a small local operator into one of South Wales' leading waste management and aggregate supply companies over more than a decade, and our people have been central to that success. We believe that a company is only as good as the team behind it, which is why we invest in our staff, reward loyalty, and create an environment where everyone can thrive.

Our drivers and operators are the backbone of the business. They represent James Grab and Tipper Hire to clients every day, delivering professional service across Cardiff, Newport, Swansea, and throughout South Wales. We recognise this responsibility and reward it accordingly. Our pay rates are competitive with — and often exceed — industry averages for South Wales. Overtime is available for drivers wanting to maximise earnings, and we operate a fair and transparent pay structure with no hidden deductions or surprises.

Training and development are taken seriously at James Grab and Tipper Hire. All new staff complete a comprehensive induction programme covering company policies, health and safety procedures, vehicle-specific training, and customer service expectations. We support drivers in maintaining and upgrading their professional qualifications — Driver CPC training is fully funded by the company, and we actively encourage staff to pursue additional certifications that benefit their careers. Several of our current team members have progressed from operator to supervisor roles having joined us without previous industry experience.

Health and safety is paramount at James Grab and Tipper Hire. Our drivers operate multi-tonne vehicles every day, and we take our duty of care to them extremely seriously. All vehicles are maintained to the highest standards with daily inspection checks. PPE is provided without question. Safety concerns are taken seriously and acted upon promptly — we have a no-blame culture that encourages reporting of near-misses and hazards so we can prevent accidents before they happen. Our safety record reflects this commitment.

The work itself is varied and engaging. No two days are the same in waste management — our team works on major commercial construction sites, residential projects, infrastructure developments, demolition works, and everything in between across South Wales. Drivers gain extensive local knowledge of the region's roads, sites, and communities. Plant operators work with a range of modern, well-maintained machinery. Yard staff develop expertise in aggregate products, logistics, and customer service. The variety keeps the work interesting and the team motivated.

We operate primarily from our depot in Brynmawr, NP23, with work across the wider South Wales region. Most positions offer regular weekday hours with optional overtime. Some roles may involve early starts to ensure first deliveries reach sites at the beginning of the working day. We value work-life balance and aim to provide as much schedule predictability as possible, particularly for drivers with family commitments. We're proud to employ local people from Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen, Caerphilly, and surrounding areas.
